Walking in Berlin from U-Bahnhof Seestraße to U-Bahnhof Leopoldplatz.
The so-called “North-South Railway” was to run under Friedrichstrasse and Chausseestrasse, according to the plans that were pursued from 1902. In the north, the corner of Müllerstrasse and Seestrasse was planned as the terminus. In the south, the line was to extend beyond the Hallesche Tor to the corner of Belle-Alliance-Strasse and Gneisenaustrasse.
Construction of the first sections began in December 1912, and it seemed possible to open the entire line in 1917/1918. The First World War prevented this. After the war, some stations and tunnels were already largely completed – including the Seestraße station – but others were missing. In 1921, construction work began again. On March 8, 1923, the section of the line up to the Seestraße subway station was finally put into operation.
The Seestraße subway station was initially the terminus, receiving four tracks on two center platforms. The western tracks 2 and 4 were intended for through service in the direction of the Kurt-Schumacher-Platz subway station (planning name at the time: Scharnweberstrasse or Reinickendorf-West subway station). The eastern tracks 1 and 3 were to serve the trains to and from the depot, which had been built above ground. In order to be able to pass under the track coming from the depot without crossing it when the line was continued in the direction of Tegel, the platforms were offset from one another in the longitudinal direction by about 50 meters. They were built at a single depth (4.4 m deep), each 81 m long and 7 m wide. In fact, only platform II and the two eastern tracks 1 and 2 adjacent to it were used for public traffic. In their extension, these tracks served the operating workshop as access (track 1) and exit (track 2), with a two-track reversing and stabling facility built in between.
