Two fantastic places to visit in Malta are the Blue Grotto and the Dingli Cliffs. One for stunning boat trips & the other for spectacular sunsets from the island’s famous cliffs that form the highest point in Malta. 🇲🇹 See more of my Drive Malta videos here → http://bit.ly/DriveMalta

My road trip around Malta continues with stops at the Blue Grotto cave network and one of the best places to see a Maltese sunset – the gigantic limestone Dingli Cliffs. Both are popular tourist destinations and high on the average person’s list of things to see on the island – especially those on a solo self-guided road trip of Malta such as me!

The day started at the Blue Grotto where I booked a place on one of the early boats heading out to the caves. The Grotto is a network of seven small caves that during certain times of the day reflect bright sunlight off the sandy seabed, it then produces a captivating display of lights and colour resulting in vivid azure and cobalt colours.

The boat ride out to the Blue Grotto is approximately 5 minutes and in total the tour lasts no longer than 20 minutes. Due to the high numbers of tourists the site has good infrastructure including a bar, gift shop, car park and a well organised gift shop. There’s also a bus stop so if you don’t have a rental car you can still make the journey. I found the history of the caves interesting and I talk more about how tourism has evolved and how the Grotto got its name in the video.

Once back on land I jumped into the hire car and headed for the Dingli Cliffs with the hope of seeing a sunset over the wide open and beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea. It had been a warm and fairly clear day so I knew I stood a good chance!

The Dingli Cliffs are the highest point on the Maltese Islands and have a great vantage point facing west – hence why they are a fantastic spot to see the sunset. It’s such a wonderful area – very rocky and on a clear day you can see for miles, another reason why it’s such a great spot to see the setting sun. There’s a marker near the cliffs that denotes the exact position of the highest point, a spot called ta dmejrek. From my location on the rocks I could see over Filfla Island and as I watched the sun dip below the sea I felt like I was the only person on the island of Malta. It’s hard to beat a sunset!

And so with the going down of the sun my day of sightseeing in Malta was over. What an incredible place! I’m already amazed at just how much this small island has to offer. Looking forward to the rest of my road trip and getting back out there to drive some more of Malta!
