In 1873, Romania’s King Carol I first began construction on the 34,000-square-foot castle as his summer residence, with work lasting for decades on this national treasure. This 19th century Neo-Renaissance royal residence was Europe’s first castle completely lit with electricity. Peles Castle is one of Romania’s most important museums and the final resting place of several Romanian monarchs, including its creator, King Carol I.
