Mirroring the problems Elijah and his family have experienced Jakarta seems to be gripped by religious intolerance. Elijah reflects on this intolerance and how this diverges so much with his own beliefs. Whilst it is true he does consider other religious beliefs, philosophy and science, Elijah always returns to his Muslim faith. But his is not the Islam of the western press, but an Islam of tolerance and love. Such issues preoccupy Elijah’s thinking.
