Madrid is quite a walkable city which is always great for tourists like me. With so much to history, culture, and incredible food to be found in Spain’s capital city, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But as you’ll find out, the vast majority of its must see sites are located in the center.
Welcome to Robbie Travels and In this video I am going to do a self guided walking tour of Madrid which is the perfect way to get to know this incredible city. It always feels so much nicer to be able to control the pace at which you explore a city.
I have started my day with a morning walk across Puente de Toledo and in Parque Madrid Rio. Then visited one of the most beautifully painted interior of a church I have ever visited: Real Basílica de San Francisco el Grande is an architectural and visual masterpiece that is as much a place of Catholic worship as it is a temple paying homage to Spanish art. With a diameter of 33 meters and height of 58 meters, the Basilica’s great dome is the largest in Spain and the fourth largest in Europe. Its several marble and gold inlaid chapels and sacristy are home to an impressive collection of paintings by Spanish masters, the most famous of which is Francisco Goya’s St. Bernardino of Siena preaching to Alfonso V of Aragon.
Then I have visited Sobrino de Botín, the oldest restaurant in the world which has been serving for over 200 years, is almost unbelievable, to try it’s famous roast suckling pig.
Then I visited The Plaza Mayor, a grand arcaded square in the center of Madrid is very popular with tourists and locals alike. The symmetrical rectangular square features a uniform architecture. The name of the plaza has changed over time. Originally it was called the “Plaza del Arrabal” but became known as the “Plaza Mayor”.
Then I have visited the Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena, Begun in 1879 but inaugurated in 1993, the cathedral is Neo-Gothic with chapels and statues of contemporary artists. The Neo-Romanesque crypt houses a 16th century image of the “Virgen de la Almudena.”
Then I walk past the Palacio Real de Madrid, Madrid’s Palacio Real is the largest still-functioning palace in the Western world, with approximately 2,800 rooms. The king and queen don’t actually live here, but this is where they host official events and welcome important figures. You can always tell when they’re at the palace, because a red flag will be flying right beside the Spanish flag.
The structure you see today isn’t the original palace. That building mysteriously burned down in 1734, and the one that was rebuilt was modeled after Versailles, as the first Bourbon King to ascend to the Spanish throne had grown up in the famous French palace.
