Bucharest is the capital of Romania. It is the most populous city and the most important industrial and commercial center of the country. The stable population of 1,883,425 inhabitants (2011) makes Bucharest one of the largest cities in the European Union. According to estimates that take into account homeless people in the city, or in transit, Bucharest gathers over three million people daily, and in the future this number is estimated to exceed four million. In addition, the localities near the city, which will be part of the future Metropolitan Area, have a population of approximately 430,000 inhabitants.
The first mention of the locality appears in 1459, during the second reign of Vlad Țepeș. In 1862 it became the capital of the United Principalities. Since then, it has undergone continuous changes, becoming the center of the Romanian artistic, cultural and media scene. Its elegant architecture and urban atmosphere earned it the nickname “Little Paris” in the Belle Époque. Although the buildings and neighborhoods in the historic center were damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes and even Nicolae Ceausescu’s systematization program, many survived. In the years after 2000, the city experienced an economic and cultural boom.
According to preliminary data from the 2011 census, 1,677,985 inhabitants live within the city limits, less than in the 2002 census. The urban environment extends beyond the limits of Bucharest, with a population of 1.93 million inhabitants. By adding satellite cities around the urban area, the proposed Bucharest metropolitan area would have a population of 2.2 million. According to Eurostat, Bucharest has a larger urban area of 2,151,880 residents. According to unofficial data, the population is over 3 million. From an economic point of view, Bucharest is the most prosperous city in Romania, and is one of the main industrial centers and transport nodes in Eastern Europe. The city has facilities for conventions, educational institutions, cultural areas, shopping malls, and recreational areas.
The city is administered by the Bucharest City Hall, has the same administrative level as the Romanian counties and is divided into six sectors.
