In this, and in our next video, our slow travel family visits Annapolis Valley Nova Scotia. In particular we visited Annapolis Royal, Fort Anne, St Clair Museum, Annapolis Royal Market and more. I know we are from Annapolis Valley, but it is a very big area and this is a part that we haven’t seen before.

Corban and Wylder loved running and rolling up and down the hills at the Fort Anne Historic Site.

Amanda and I take the time to acknowledge that the Fort Anne site is located on Mi’kmaw land that was never ceded to England, or Canada. It has been Mi’kmaw territory for at least 14,000 years and we wanted to bring some attention to that fact.

We also learned that Fort Anne and Annapolis Royal is the first permanent settlement in Canada and the oldest North American permanent settlement of France. It was colonized by the French in 1605 and named Port Royale and subsequently was the capital of Acadia. After several failed attempts the English defeated the French in 1613. The English later renamed the settlement Annapolis Royal after Queen Anne and it became the Capital of Nova Scotia until the founding of Halifax in 1749.

We walked the streets of Annapolis Royal exploring some of the shops, museums and the Annapolis Royal Market. We sampled some local foods, bought some beer, produce and other things.

We met a volunteer at St. Clair Museum keeping tool making alive on the streets of Annapolis Royal. Inside the museum they have peeled back the layers on Canada’s oldest wooden building (technically two buildings) so that visitors can see wood framing techniques from well over a hundred years ago.

We also met a fellow traveller; Betty from www.betstravelsabout.wordpress.com who was selling clothing and other interesting items from South-East Asia.

We ate at The Whiskey Teller who had the best fries we’ve ever had and some AMAZING portobello mushroom burgers! Their website is here: https://thewhiskeyteller.com

Annapolis Royal is definitely a town we’ll be returning to and recommend it to other travelling families exploring Nova Scotia.

As you may know, every Friday we have been sharing an interview with a new travel family to learn what makes them tick, how they make it all happen and ask them their best piece of advice for families considering full time travel with kids. We will be moving those videos over to their own channel which you can reach here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjpIg0V0qvLMhKTt_kUMqYw
