The capital Pakpattan is located about 169 km from Lahore and 205 km from Multan. The district is bounded to the northwest by Sahiwal District, to the north by Okara District, to the southeast by the Sutlej River and Bahawalnagar District, and to the southwest by Vehari District.

Pakpattan is the city of the great Saint Baba Farid of Chisti. The original name of Pakpattan was “Ajodhan”. It was renamed Pakpattan after it was used for the first time by Saint Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Ganj Shakar.
Pakpattan is the 48th-most-populous city in Pakistan (176,693). The top 10 most populous cities in Pakistan are: Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Peshawar, Multan, Hyderabad, Islamabad, Quetta.
Pakpattan was founded as a village by the name of Ajodhan. Ajodhan was the location of a ferry service across the Sutlej River that rendered it an important part of the ancient trade routes that connected Multan to Delhi. Given its position on the flat plains of Punjab, #Ajodhan was vulnerable to waves of invasions from Central Asia that began in the late 10th century. It was captured by Sebüktegin in 977–78 CE and by Ibrahim Ghaznavi in 1079–80.

پاکپتن شہر کے جنوب میں دریائے ستلج بہتا ہے سلطان محمود غزنوی نے یہاں پہلی اسلامی حکومت قائم کی، تین سو سالہ مغلیہ دورِحکومت کے بعد راجا رنجیت سنگھ یہاں حکمران ہوا، جس کو انگریزوں نے شکست دی اور قیام پاکستان تک قابض رہے

پاکپتن کے جنوب میں دریائے ستلج کے پار ضلع بہاولنگر، شمال مشرق میں ضلع اوکاڑه، شمال مغرب میں ضلع ساہیوال اور بطرفِ مغرب ضلع وہاڑی واقع ہیں_
