My goal to teach as many people as I can about the amazingness that is Indian food continued with my friend Robert Rivani at his mansion in Los Angeles! Come with me as I eat Indian food in the $29 million Castle Rivani in Beverly Hills, California!
Robert Rivani is a real estate mogul from my hometown of Miami. He’s one of the smartest and hardest-working guys around and now lives in a palatial, castle-like house that’s inspired by Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and Alice in Wonderland! There, he’d take me on a tour of his castle while enjoying some delicious Indian food!

Right off the bat, we started off with the tour. In his foyer, he has a massive map of Westeros from Game of Thrones. He even has the famous Iron Throne! He got a custom woodmaker to create it for him!
He has an Alice in Wonderland, jungle-inspired room that’s a chill, hangout spot. There’s also a room with a bar with custom ceilings, Chinese chairs, furniture made from animal bone, and a Harry Potter-inspired apothecary!
He took me to see the modest bathroom, and then a red and black gothic-style bathroom with lots of dragons in it! There’s a throne dining room with a Chinese backdrop on the walls. The house is an awesome mix of historical and fantasy fiction!
In the kitchen, we met Chef Shachi, an amazing chef who works at Adya Restaurant in Irvine and Anaheim. They focus on Indian street food!
She made us some pani puri, chickpea chaat, keema pao, and more! We started with the pani puri. I loved the potatoes, chickpeas, minty pani, the tamarind chutney, and her amazing Spice Girl Sauces hot sauce! They also have a tomato chutney coming out soon!
Next was the chickpea chaat. It was so crunchy and flavorful. The tamarind and mint chutney, crunchy sev, and creamy yogurt were amazing! It was a backdoor spice that sneaks up on you. Then, she made some keema pao using lamb, aloo gobi with some tiny potatoes.
While Shachi cooked, Robert took me outside to the backyard. It’s very Alice In Wonderland-inspired and has an amazing infinity pool, statues, lounge chairs, a basketball court. He has a chessboard with individually set pieces of grass and flowers! Robert and his wife Krystal throw parties out there!
Then, we tried the keema pao in a different room. I loved the lamb and the caramelized onions! The lamb was good enough to eat by itself!
Then, she brought us the chicken dum biryani, the coconut-ginger halibut, peppers stuffed with paneer bhurji and tomato chutney, aloo gobi, a flatbread called phulka, and raita. First, we jumped on the aloo gobi. The small potatoes were really nice.
The malabar-style coconut-ginger halibut was incredible. The peppers reminded me of chiles rellenos. I loved the tomato chutney. The phulka is like a small chapati and was perfect for soaking up the coconut gravy and the chutney.
Then, we had the chicken dum biryani, which contained tomatoes, ginger, and more! I taught Robert how to eat it with his hands. It was very floral and fragrant, and full of complex flavors and textures. Adding the raita made it creamy!
Then, we finished with gulab jamun and ras malai. The gulab jamun is super sweet, while the ras malai is like a creamy cheese dumpling with saffron. Combining them is the best! By the time we finished, we were both full!
