Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui in Spanish, is a Chilean dependency in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is the Polynesian island world’s easternmost outpost. It is well-known for its massive stone statues.

The Moai recovered by Van Tilburg’s team were upright in place, one on a pedestal and the other in a deep trench, indicating that they were designed to stay there. “The concept that all standing statues in Rano Raraku were merely awaiting shipment out of the quarry is significantly altered by this investigation,” Van Tilburg stated.

Archaeologists suggest that the statues were a representation of the Polynesian people’s ancestors. The Moai sculptures are positioned to watch over the inhabitants, facing away from the sea and toward the villages. So these Moai are looking over a flat settlement site at Ahu Tongariki.
