My new years trip with two friends to the headwaters of the Macaulay River, near Tekapo, in NZ’s South Island, came “unstuck” when, despite looking out carefully for this kind of soft ground, we fall right into it only 100 metres from our intended campsite .

This stuff was like quicksand and , once we drained the water, became rock hard.

The signs warning about ” soft bottom” at the beginning of the track are pretty accurate.

It took John Wylie and his digger, 3 days to get it out, and only after moving over 100 tons of gravel.

This is what I would call a shitfest.
