#creatorsforpeace The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine continues to get worse for innocent civilians on a daily and almost hourly basis. An armed conflict that has been brewing in the region since 2014 sharply escalated just a couple of weeks ago, spilling into other parts of the country and sending millions of civilians fleeing across borders in search of safety. Even before the heavy fighting and airstrikes that started at the end of February — prompting Ukraine to declare a nationwide state of emergency — insecurity and deprivation had become a way of life for families in the eastern part of the country, particularly for those living in the vicinity of the ‘contact line’ that separates government-controlled areas from non-government-controlled areas.

The war in Ukraine, now in its second week, is taking a terrible toll on children’s lives and well-being. Children who were playing and going to school just days ago are now coping with the devastating consequences of armed conflict. Millions of people have been caught up in the violence as fighting intensifies in and around urban centers in Ukraine. Parents desperate to get their children out of harm’s way are leaving everything behind in search of safety. Families continue to shelter underground, in subways, or basements, cut off from the most basic services. With resources dwindling, hospitals are struggling to care for patients.

Hundreds of thousands of people across Ukraine are without safe drinking water due to damage to the country’s infrastructure. This damage to Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure has also left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity. How long could you live without electricity and water? Hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed; schools, orphanages, and health centers are reported to have sustained heavy damage. Children are especially vulnerable to being killed or maimed in this fight when weapons and explosive munitions are used in populated areas. Since the violence began 17 children have been killed and 30 have been injured, according to the United Nations. Actual numbers are likely to be much higher. Half a million children and their families have already fled Ukraine for neighboring countries. The crisis has sparked a massive population displacement that could soon become one of Europe’s largest refugee crises since the end of World War II.

UNICEF’s humanitarian work in Ukraine has focused on safeguarding children’s rights to safety, health, education, psychological support, water food, and basic sanitation services. Water and education systems have been frequently targeted in attacks. Access to safe water and schooling is disrupted and remains limited as a result. Ukraine’s increasingly fragile health system continues to struggle to cover essential services. Working with partners, UNICEF teams in Ukraine will be delivering medical supplies to 22 hospitals in 5 different conflict-affected areas to benefit 20,000 children and mothers. More supplies are on the way, including blankets and warm winter clothing. UNICEF is preparing to scale up assistance in the hardest-hit areas as soon as humanitarian access opens up and security restrictions are eased.
