THE UNIVERSITY BOTANICAL GARDEN “JEVREMOVAC” was founded in 1855, and since 1889 it is located on the property of King Milan Obrenović, which he donated to the Great School with the obligation to serve educational purposes, to build a botanical garden and to name it Jevremovac. , in memory of his grandfather Jevrem.
Previously, the garden was the garden of Josif Pančić in the yard of the Knjaževac-Serbian Lyceum from 1853 and the Botanical Garden on Dorćol near the Danube, founded in 1874, which was abandoned due to the flood on the Danube.
In 1892, a glass garden consisting of two wings connected by a central dome was erected in the Botanical Garden of Belgrade, on an area of 500 m2. It was built from parts transferred from the Mozentin factory in Dresden and at that time was among the most beautiful in the Balkans.
The library was founded in 1853 and is one of the oldest botanical libraries in Southeast Europe. It contains more than 5,000 books, scientific and professional journals and more than 6,000 papers in the field of botany. Its holdings include many rare editions of books.
The herbarium was founded in 1860. It contains valuable botanical material from the 19th and 20th centuries, from the Balkans, Europe and the whole world. It was included in the International Directory of Registered Herbariums of the World (Index Herbariorum), under the designation BEOU. To date, it has been increased to 180,000 samples. The most important collection is Pančić’s Herbarium Panciciarum. He was partially killed during the world wars. The occupier sent part of the fund to Vienna, Zagreb, Sarajevo and Budapest, which was never returned.
The Japanese Garden contains a collection of Far Eastern flora and was founded in 2004.
MILAN I OBRENOVIĆ was a prince (1868—1882) and king of Serbia (1882—1889), son of Miloš Obrenović and grandson of Jevrem Obrenović (brother of Prince Miloš).
Milan had a difficult childhood in Moldavia, so his guardian became Prince Mihailo Obrenović. After the assassination of Prince Mihailo, young Milan was chosen as his successor. As a minor, he was replaced by a three-member governorship, and he took power in 1872 and relied on the army during his reign. He passed away in 1901, in Vienna, from pneumonia.
