Number one – Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is located in northern Arizona and is one of the greatest tourist attractions in the United States. Carved over several million years by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon attains a depth of over 1 mile and 277 miles long. The Grand Canyon is not the deepest or the longest canyon in the world but the overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape offers visitor spectacular vistas that are unmatched throughout the world.
Number two – Fish River Canyon
The Fish River Canyon is second only in grandeur to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and one of the top tourist attractions in Namibia. It is absolutely magnificent and breathtaking in its immensity. The Fish River Canyon features a gigantic ravine, in total about 100 miles long, up to 17 miles wide and in places almost 1800 feet deep. Because the Fish River is being dammed it only contains a small amount of running water.
Number three – Gorge du Verdon
The Gorge du Verdon is a river canyon in south-eastern France that is considered by many to be Europe’s most beautiful. The Gorge du Verdon is about 25 kilometers in length and rises a spectacular 2,300 feet from the Verdon river below. The river, which is named after its startling green emerald color, is one of the canyon’s most beautiful features. The area has become a magnet for walkers, climbers and lovers of water sports which includes rafting, kayaking, sailing and water-skiing.
Number four – Antelope Canyon
With its graceful curves in the rock and glowing orange and purple colors, the Antelope Canyon is one of the most-photographed sandstone slot canyons in the world. The Antelope Canyon includes two separate photogenic canyons – Upper and Lower Antelope. Both canyons are so narrow in places that one can stretch out his or her arms and touch both sides. Although the canyons are beautiful, they can sometimes be dangerous. In 1997 a flash flood swept into Lower Antelope and killed 11 tourists.
Number five – Colca Canyon
Colca Canyon is a canyon of the Colca River, in the Andes mountain range, in southern Peru. Colca Canyon is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, but the canyon’s walls are less steep. The big attraction here, in addition to the awesome sights, are the Andean condors. The condors can be seen at fairly close range as they float on the rising thermals.
