Thailand is one of the world’s most visited countries, with over 35 million visitors each year. The stunning southern islands, Bangkok’s diverse street food scene, and the thousands of temples scattered across the country are among the most iconic attractions.
Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized by a European country. In fact, the country’s name in Thai is Prathet Thai, which translates as “land of the free.”
People often marvel at Thailand’s forests and jungles, but there used to be more. Most people are unaware that hardwood forest-covered nearly all of northern Thailand over a century ago. Only about a quarter of that forest remains today. As a result, Thailand has outright prohibited logging.
