Traian Vuia Timișoara International Airport
airport in Romania
“Traian Vuia” TimiÈ™oara International Airport (IATA: TSR, ICAO: LRTR) is the third airport in Romania in terms of the number of passengers, serving a population of 2.5 million inhabitants. Starting with January 6, 2003, the airport is named after the Romanian inventor Traian Vuia, born in TimiÈ™ County. The airport serves as the operational base for Wizz Air and is considered a reserve airport for Bucharest (OTP), Budapest (BUD) and Belgrade (BEG), being the most important airport in the DKMT Euroregion.
The airport meets all the conditions of aviation safety according to international standards, as a result, in June 2014, the Romanian Civil Aviation Authority authorized its operation for a period of three years (maximum possible, usually the authorization being annual). There are no operating restrictions for any airline or aircraft type. Timișoara International Airport became, at the beginning of 2017, the first airport in Romania certified by EASA.
The first air base in Timiș became operational during the First World War. It was located on the communal pasture near the commune of Dudeștii Noi and operated between November 15, 1915 and April 1917 for loading and repairing German airships. After the closure of this air base in 1919, the villagers tried to dismantle it piece by piece, but the metal skeleton of the hall collapsed on them, and five people died.
By the decision of the Interim Commission of July 10, 1935 and based on the telegraphic order of the Ministry of Interior no. 12604/1935, it is decided to establish a temporary airport of Timișoara, located on the training ground of the Military Garrison, approximately on the current location of Iulius Mall. On July 17, 1935, the first technical flight landed at the airport. The official inauguration took place on July 20, 1935. At the time of its establishment, it had no material basis. For the installation of the airport administration, a temporary building made of planks and tarred cardboard was erected, consisting of three rooms, distributed as follows: an office for the commander, a traffic office and an administrative office, a guardhouse and a waiting room.
On July 27, 1936, following a report concluded between the authorities and the commander of the TimiÈ™oara Communal Airport, it was decided to allocate a fund of approximately five million lei for the construction of the final airport. It was planned to build an airport, a hangar and two buildings – transmission and telegraph stations – located near Timisoara, on the Cioca plain. Following the auction, the company was declared the winner Aug. Schmiedigen, for the amount of 4.5 million lei. During the project, flights to and from Timisoara were further taken over by the temporary airport. The construction of the new airport was completed in 1938, but the auction was quite dubious, which is why it was canceled by the Superior Administrative Court.
