One of these is the critically endangered Bryde’s whale, which calls Hauraki Bay home. Amazingly, at least 25 of the 37 species of marine mammals in the southern hemisphere are found in the area, accounting for almost a third of the global population of these species. There are huge schools of whales and dolphins jumping from boat to boat, and hundreds of seabirds feeding en masse.
In all, Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf is one of the top 10 marine-watching destinations in the world.
