Welcome to Top Oz Tours’ YouTube channel! In this video, we take you to famous Rottnest Island – 19 kilometres off the Western Australian coast from capital city Perth. For many visitors, it’s all about snapping a selfie with the resident quokkas (one of Australia’s smallest wallabies). But ‘Rotto’ (as Perthites call it) has so much more to offer, and this video is packed with ideas for top things to do on the island.
We travel with Rottnest Express, which operates a fast ferry service from Perth and Fremantle. Rottnest hasn’t always been the holidaymaker’s utopia that it is today. Known to the Noongar First People as Wadjemup, the island served as an Aboriginal prison from the late 1830s for close to a century. Our first stop is the Wadjemup Museum to chat with Brendan Moore – a Whadjuk Traditional owner – about the island’s significance.
From there, we head off explore the island on a bus tour, taste-test a celebrated local specialty, and of course, meet the quokkas!
