Venice is one of the most beautiful and famous cities in the world. In the 13th century, Venice was the most prosperous city in Europe. The city became very wealthy because it monopolized the trade of spices and products from the Middle East to Northern and Western Europe between the Byzantine and subsequent Ottoman Empires. Venice was closely associated with Constantinople. Venice eventually became a European empire (La Serenissima) with many trade centers and colonies along the Adriatic Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean. His greatest fortune, eventually lost to the Turks, was Greece’s Crete and Cyprus islands.
