The Giau pass is an alpine pass of the Dolomites, located at 2236 m in the province of Belluno between the Val Boite and the Val Cordevole, which connects the municipalities of Colle Santa Lucia and Selva di Cadore with Cortina d’Ampezzo (at the top of the pass the boundary stone between the then Serenissima Republic of Venice and the Empire of Austria is still visible today, today the municipal border between San Vito di Cadore and Colle Santa Lucia).
Located in the center of a vast mountain pasture, at the foot of Nuvolau (2,574 m) and Averau (2,647 m) from which it is possible to easily reach Monte Pore (2,405 m) or even the Mondeval alp at the foot of the Lastoi de Formin (2,657 m), the panorama to the west towards Colle Santa Lucia with the Pale di San Martino, the Cime D’Auta, the Marmolada, the Piz Boè and the Setsass is majestic, equally to the east towards the basin of Cortina D’Ampezzo, with the Tofane, the Croda Rossa, the Pomagagnon, the Cristallo, the Croda da Lago and the Lastoni di Formin.
