Emmanuelle Houdart’s First Exhibition in Asia

Swiss Illustrator and textile designer Emmanuelle Houdart’s drawing and costume exhibition has debuted in Hong Kong at Charbon Space.

Houdart lives and works in Paris. As an author and an illustrator, she develops a colourful, graphic universe livening up the inanimate, crossing the animal and human being, the supernatural and the monstrous. In her works, Houdart composes narrative representations where the characters are provided with symbolic attributes, which translate their identity as their emotional state. Since 1996, Houdart has written, illustrated and published more than 20 books in different languages, mainly albums for children. She has also produced illustrations popularly received by grown-ups and youth, and led numerous successful workshops and exhibitions across Europe.

At the exhibition, Houdart presents 13 original paintings thar she created for her latest book Ma Mère – meaning “My Mother” in French – written by Stéphane Servant, edited by Thierry Magnier and launched in September 2015 in Paris. Houdart has turned some of her illustrations into fabrics and costumes, reflecting the soul of the characters and their relationship to the surroundings in each costume she designs. Additionally, 18 drawings from her one-and-only book for adults, Garde Robe – meaning “Wardrobe” in French – will also make an appearance.
