Mariupol is a city in the Donetsk Oblast of Ukraine. It is an important industrial and shipping center for the area and a port on the Kalmius River. Mariupol was founded in 1778 by Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin, Emperor Catherine II’s favorite and one of the most successful Russian military leaders during her reign.
In modern times, Mariupol has been a major producer of steel for Ukraine. Steel production started in 1869 when it became a part of Russia. In Soviet times, Mariupol became one of the largest steel centers in Eastern Europe as well as home to a powerful shipbuilding industry which still exists today.
