Tourrettes-sur-Loup is a small medieval village of about 4000 inhabitants perched on the foothills of the Parc Naturel Régional des Préalpes du Sud. It offers a magical and relaxing setting in a green setting a few kilometers from Vence and Nice.
Known for being fortified by houses constituting the ramparts, this village of the Alpes-Maritimes is also famous for being the capital of the violet, a tradition elevated to the rank of local institution. In the heart of the village, the Grand’Rue is home to no less than thirty artists’ studios, galleries, and boutiques of creative craftsmen.
Inside the church of Saint-Grégoire, a building dating from the 12th century and renovated in 1551, you can admire a stele dating from the 3rd century dedicated to Mercury – god of trade, thieves, travels, and messenger of other gods in Roman mythology. You can also see a 15th-century triptych, inspired by the Bréa brothers, famous painters from Nice in their time.
Between the end of February and the beginning of March, you will have the unique opportunity to discover, over two weekends, the famous festival of violets. For the occasion, the “Bastides aux violettes” – gardens and museum dedicated to the violet – is open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm without interruption.
