Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal. It is the country’s major urban area and its cultural, economic, and historic center.
The city of Lisbon has a population of about 550,000 people in a territory of only 10.5 square miles (27 km2). The population is divided into two parts: an urban area with a population density of 2,700 people per square kilometer; and the suburbs with a density of 1,700 people per square kilometer.
Lisbon is located on the western coast of Europe’s the Iberian Peninsula, facing the Atlantic Ocean to the west and surrounded by low mountains to the east.
