Ong Ang Canal – Some of Thailand’s best-known street artists participated in the Ong Ang Canal project that joins Rattanakosin and Chinatown. Rattanakosin was established as Thailand’s capital in 1782 by King Rama I. Palaces, temples and government offices have been built on the island by successive Kings of the Chakra Dynasty ever since. Rattanakosin is known as an island because of the Chao Phraya River to its east and two canals that circle the district to its west. Klong Ong Ang is the second canal of Rattanakosin.
Songwat Road – Chinatown has joined much of the rest of the city by welcoming colourful street art. Years ago, Bangkok was a pretty grey and artless capital, but the BUKRUK Urban Arts Festival brought global artists to Bangkok to aim to create a reputation as an Asian art capital. The Bukruk Urban Arts festival left a colourful mark on Bangkok with two editions being held in 2013 and 2016 and helped raise the profile of street art and creativity within local communities. BUKRUK, meaning “invasion,” assembled several Thai and European artists for a burst of street art in the very heart of Bangkok.
Peiing School – Reaching its 100th anniversary this May, Peiing School is known for excellence in teaching Chinese. Several of Thailand’s top businessmen, such as Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi of Thai Beverage PLC and Paibul Damrongchaitham of GMM Grammy, went to this primary school. Nestled behind the highly revered Lao Pun Thao Kong Shrine, Peiing also boasts a beautiful building.
Luang Kocha Itsahak Mosque – In the old days, when Yaowarat was Bangkok’s major commercial hub, the lack of a mosque caused difficulties for foreign traders who followed Islam. Thus, Luang Kocha Itsahak Mosque was built in the late 19th century on a private land donated by a Siamese government official with Malay roots. As the only mosque in Yaowarat, it has been the place of worship for visitors and Malay and Indian Muslim traders working in the warehouses and trade companies, who are still living in this neighborhood until today. Unlike traditional mosques, Luang Kocha Itsahak Mosque was built in a European style, which was popular at that time.
Aitch took part in BUKRUK Urban Arts Festival in 2016 and created this magnificent pink installation with its bright, heavily patterned floral designs, decked out with tigers, flowers, and other striking vivid imagery. The Pink wall (as it is often referred to) is representative of her inner world that’s inspired by travel, naturalistic illustrations, Naive Art, childhood memories, legends, and folklore.
Roa hails from Belgium and focuses on wild or urban animals native to the area he paints in. His works The great success of ROA’s art lies in the fact that his works feature huge animals, which are found in the most unusual places in large cities throughout the world and are mainly created in black and white.. Using irony as a vehicle of expression, perhaps he may be aiming to put these animals back to the place they once occupied before large cities were built. In Bangkok he has created an iconic mural of two tumbling elephants easily seen by commuters on the Chao Phraya River heading south.
Aryz – This Spanish artist does not categorise his art and simply focuses on shapes and colours. With no message in mind, Aryz painted this eye-catching mural of massive bicycles that are contrasted with relatively tiny humans. Aryz’s mural features two deconstructed bicycles painted in his trademarked muted colours.
