Indonesia (pronunciation Indonesian: [in.ˈdo.nɛ.sja]), with the official name of the Republic of Indonesia (RI), or in full the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia that is crossed by the equator and is located between the asian and oceanian continental landmasses, so Indonesia is known as a transcontinental country, as well as between the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
Indonesia is the 14th largest country as well as the largest archipelagic country in the world with an area of 1,904,569 km²,[8] as well as the country with the 6th most islands in the world, with 17,504 islands.
[15] An alternative name commonly used to refer to the “Indonesian Archipelago” is called Nusantara. [16] In addition, Indonesia is also the 4th most populous country in the world with a population of 270,203,917 in 2020,[17] as well as the world’s largest and largest Muslim country, with more than 230 million adherents. [18] [19] Indonesia is one of the world’s multiracial, multiethnic, and multicultural countries, as is the United States. [20]
Indonesia borders a number of neighboring countries in Southeast Asia, the Australian continent, and Oceania. Indonesia borders on land with Malaysia on the islands of Borneo and Sebatik, with Papua New Guinea on the island of Papua, and with Timor Leste on the island of Timor. Neighboring countries that only border the sea with Indonesia are Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, and the united territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India.
Indonesia is a unitary state with a republican form of government based on the valid Indonesian Constitution, namely the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia (1945 Constitution). [21] Based on the 1945 Constitution, the House of Representatives (DPR), the Regional Representative Council (DPD), and the President are directly elected by the people.
The capital of Indonesia is currently the Special Capital Region of Jakarta (DKI Jakarta). On January 18, 2022, the government designated the capital of the archipelago on the island of Kalimantan, which occupies the Penajam Paser Utara area, to replace Jakarta as the new capital. [22] To date, the process of switching the capital is still temporarily ongoing.
