Cambodia is a state in Southeast Asia, located in the south of the Indochina peninsula. It borders Vietnam to the east, Laos to the northeast, and Thailand to the northwest.
The area of Cambodia is 181,000 km². A thousand years ago, the great Khmer empire occupied the territory of modern Cambodia and all its neighbors. In the city of Angkor, which was then the capital of the empire, more than one million people lived. Today the capital of Cambodia is the city of Phnom Penh, which is also the largest city of the state. It has a population of 2,234,566 people. Other major cities are Battambang (250,000 people), Siem Reap (171,800 people), Sihanoukville (132,000 people) and Poipet (89,549 people).
