How good are Coral Bay and Exmouth really?
Is it as good as people say it is or are some of the locals and the wind ruining it?
They are awesome destinations with a beautiful coastline, awesome snorkel spots and hikes BUT campgrounds are expensive, locals often unhappy with “vanlifers” and the wind is crazy!
So what’s the hype about it?!
Well, the nature is unbeatable! The underwater world you can explore off the beaches without having to jump on a boat is more diverse than anywhere else. Turtles, big stingrays, gropers and a ton of other fish, sea stars and coral. Every snorkeling spot has it’s own little under water oasis with different fish. When you’re lucky you might even see sharks, especially at Lakeside!
We checked out three of the most famous snorkeling spots: Oyster Stacks, Turquoise Bay and Lakeside. Jele was desperately trying to find turtles (the only reason why she would jump into the water ;)). Oyster stacks is only good during high tide since it is really shallow and the rocks are sharp. There is plenty of coral and fish around but relatively small. Turquoise Bay is known for turtles, which we didn’t see. We only found a bunch of beautiful looking fish, so we really had to go and check out Lakeside. Lakeside is famous for big animals. Once we saw this massive turtle we kept swimming around with it and didn’t even look for other fish. The current was fairly strong as well and it was super windy.
The hikes in Cape Range National Park are beautiful as well and you can see all kinds of wildlife. At the end of the Yardie Creek walk we spotted a bunch of rock wallabies, which are adorable (could watch them all day).
A great spot for sunset and sunrise is the lighthouse. We loved parking up there and making dinner with a beautiful view!
Free camping in Exmouth is not allowed! They have Rangers driving around at a certain time in the morning ;). Also, there are a few bush tracks around that you can go and explore DURING THE DAY ;).
CORAL BAY: It is beautiful there but to be honest, the atmosphere wasn’t very inviting. The caravan park is packed and people would tell you to move on during the day if you are parked in one spot for too long :D. This time of the year you can’t really see whale sharks anymore and there are no baby sharks at the shark sanctuary yet. Also, it is super windy, so you might wanna come back around March, April when the wind calms down and the whale shark season starts again.
You can find some National Park Campgrounds. We decided to check out 14 Mile Beach, took a “4wd” track (which is only a corrugated track) and stayed there for the night. BEAUTIFUL!
For what we did you didn’t really need a Unimog but it was still good fun and we even met another Mog owner 🙂
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and see you hopefully next week!
