All along the coast of West Africa, spread across countries like Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Senegal, you find the ruins of old forts and castles that the Europeans had built. While some of these forts were built to trade for gold and other raw materials, their most common purpose was also their most tragic: the buying, selling and transport of slaves. And nowhere in Africa do you find as large a concentration of forts as you do along the coast of Ghana. As an American, I had never seen this side of the story. It’s sad, but it’s also a history that we all need to come to grips with and understand.
