Ljubljana (293,000 inhabitants) is one of the smallest European capitals. It’s never too crowded, but you never get bored. 50,000 university students give it a youthful charm and, as the economic and cultural center of Slovenia, it has a lot to offer locals and visitors alike.

The image of Ljubljana has been strongly shaped by the work of world-renowned architect Jože Plečnik, who also designed the urban planning of the city centre. The famous Tromostovje (Three Bridges) is one of Plečnik’s best-known creations. A visit to Plečnik’s house will allow you to discover the heritage of the architect thanks to his preserved apartment, where you can also admire his personal objects.
Prešeren Square is located in the heart of the historic center of the city. It is a place uniting Baroque with Art Nouveau as well as the architecture of Jože Plečnik. This square is characterized by the remarkable pink facade of the Franciscan Church, which is probably the most famous image of Ljubljana; you can also admire the monument to the poet France Prešeren and the Three Bridges of Plečnik.
The City Cathedral, housing the seat of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana, is the most important Baroque church in Ljubljana. Being located on the spot where a Roman basilica stood in the 13th century, this cathedral was erected in 1701 after the basilica was burned down by the Turks. It is characterized above all by extraordinary wall paintings and other elements of artistic heritage.
Ljubljana Castle, which has been overlooking the city from the top of the hill for already 900 years, is Ljubljana’s greatest point of interest. From the observation tower of the castle and from the surrounding wall, you can enjoy the most beautiful views of the city. The halls of the Castle host the museum exhibition »History of Slovenia«, the Puppet Museum. You can see an installation and several historical spaces, including the Saint-Georges Chapel, the Penitentiary Center and the Virtual Castle.
Many artistic exhibitions are organized at the Château, which you can also reach by funicular. The Castle also hosts two restaurants: »Gostilna na gradu« and »Strelec«, as well as the Castle cafeteria (Grajska kavarna), a wine bar (Grajska Vinoteka & Hram Strelec) and a night club. The Château is a site for cultural events, events for the whole family, dance parties and an open-air summer cinema called ‘Films sous les étoiles’.
