I’ve wanted to visit Melilla for decades… It’s a small enclave on the African continent, owned by Spain but surrounded by Morocco. A quirk of history and exactly the sort of odd place I immediately want to visit as soon as I hear about it!
I’d already planned a trip to Sevilla and a quick look at the aircraft schedules showed me that I could fly directly to Melilla for a modest sum in about an hour… But where’s the fun in that? Why not instead spend 13 hours travelling overland by train, taxi and ferry???
This is the story of that journey – a Renfe train to Malaga, a taxi ride to the port and then a 6 hour crossing of the Mediterranean. A crossing on what turned out to be somewhat of a ghost ship…
