Our time in Thailand has come to an end! We left the Phi Phi Islands on a beautiful sunny day and contemplated jumping off the ferry and staying another night. We did end up leaving and headed to the Hilton Garden Inn in Phuket Bang Tao. We booked this stay completely free using the points we earned through our Amex Hilton Surpass card. With this credit card, we have gold status and are automatically upgraded to the best room available. We hung out at the pool, biked around, and enjoyed free breakfast the next morning.
Then we took a Grab ride to the Phuket International Airport to board our flight to Udon Thani, which is a city near the border of Thailand and Laos. We had to take an hour Grab ride to the border where we would make the land crossing to Laos. You can take a bus from the airport to the border, but we needed to get there fast before the border closed and we were stranded. The bus ride takes 3 hours!
Once we arrived at the Thai Lao Friendship 1 Bridge, we bought our bus tickets and headed through Thailand and Laos immigration and passport control centers. We both had to get a Visa on Arrival when entering Laos. The cost was $40 USD for each VOA. We ended up meeting 2 other people who were heading into Vientiane city center so we shared a taxi.
We checked into our accommodation (located right on the Mekong River), got some cash, and had dinner at a restaurant connected to our Airbnb. Honestly, everything went smoothly and we are so excited to explore Laos.
