SALAR JUNG MUSEUM (HYDERABAD)
The Salar Jung Museum was established in 1951 in Dewan Deodi, the ancestral palace of the Salar Jungs, an illustrious family who served as prime ministers to the Nizams, erstwhile rulers of Hyderabad. The entire collection which is a repository of art objects from nearly all over the world, right from Europe to the far eastern countries in Asia was shifted to the main building in 1968 which was constructed on the southern banks of the river Musi. In addition, on either side of the main building two blocks were added in 2000, named after Mir Turab Ali Khan, Salar Jung I and Mir Laiq Ali Khan, Salar Jung II.
The museum has in its collection the works of art of European, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern origin, apart from chronicles of rich Indian heritage dating from the Mauryan to the Nizams in Hyderabad.
Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III is mainly responsible for the collection.
The museum also has a large collection of rare manuscripts and a well equipped reference library, thus making it not only a place of art but also a source of knowledge for those seeking to know more about our history and heritage.
