The Pombaline Lower Town

The Pombaline Lower Town area covers about 235,620 square meters of central Lisbon, Portugal. It consists of the grid of streets north of the Praça do Comércio, roughly between the Cais do Sodré and the Alfama district beneath the Lisbon Castle, and extends northwards towards the Rossio and Figueira squares and the Avenida da Liberdade (Lisbon), a tree-lined boulevard noted for its tailoring shops and cafes. The Pombaline Baixa is an elegant district, primarily constructed after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. It takes its name from Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal, the Prime Minister to Joseph I of Portugal from 1750 to 1777 and key figure of the Enlightenment in Portugal, who took the lead in ordering the rebuilding of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The Marquis of Pombal imposed strict conditions on rebuilding the city, and the current grid pattern strongly differs from the organic street plan that characterized the district before the earthquake.

Arco da Rua Augusta

This triumphal arch in Rua Augusta has always impressed those roaming Lisbon’s busiest pedestrianised street.
But now you can visit the top of this unique structure for a truly singular and impressive view of Baixa and the river. It symbolises the rebirth of a new Lisbon after the tragedy of the earthquake, fire and tsunami in 1755 that razed what stood before.
And it affirms, in Latin, “The Virtues of the Greatest”: the strength, resilience and achievements of the Portuguese people.

Praça do Comércio

This is one of the most beautiful squares in all Europe, opening southwards onto the huge Tagus estuary. Until the era of mass aviation, this was Lisbon´s great reception hall for visitors arriving by sea even better able to enjoy its beauty from their vantage points on slowly docking vessels.
It was at the dock here that the Kings and Heads of State would disembark when visiting Portugal.

Hello, we are Carmen and Al and we are travelers. We want to share our experience of different culture, food, and enjoy the scenery and the beauty of nature. We have a small Nucamp TAB320 that we use to visit and review National Park, State Parks, and COE. We are also Carnival cruisers and enjoy going to the western and eastern Caribbean. Our trips are done inexpensively by finding discounts, bargains, and traveling out of season. We want our viewer to enjoy the beauty of what we see and do. We also invite you to share your experience by recommending places we should go and film. One of the places we visit the most is the beach, were we collect shells and shark teeth. We also share our experience with our trips to the New England area mainly Maine, where we eat a lot of difference sea food from the area.
