SELBY PARISH #74: SELBY

The 74th and final parish of the Selby district, is the town of Selby itself. This is a market town located 14 miles South of York on the River Ouse

The town’s origins date from the establishment of a Viking settlement. It was first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 779AD. The modern name “Selby” is first attested in a Yorkshire charter dated 1030.

It’s most prominent feature is its Abbey which in 1618 became the parish church
