In the historic Gascony region of southwestern France lies a stretch of green ocean: the Landes forest. This immense pine forest of which extends over 1 million hectares did not exist until as recently as two centuries ago. The Landes forest was entirely manmade and established in 1854, making it the largest artificial forest in Western Europe.

Despite its grand and powerful appearance, the Landes forest is struggling to adapt to and combat the climate upheavals. Founded on the monoculture of maritime pines, the lack of diversities in tree species renders the forest more vulnerable to climate change and parasites. French foresters are inventing and trying alternative foresting methods to revive the jewel of Gascony.
