Explore Religious & Temples at Waterloo & Bugis Street. Waterloo Street (Chinese: 滑铁卢街/四马路) is a two-way street in downtown Singapore stretching from Rochor Road to Bras Basah Road. It passes through the planning areas of Rochor and the Museum Planning Area.
Formerly a one-way street, the street has been converted to a two-way street and the northern end of the street has been converted into a pedestrian mall to ease the problem of traffic jams, as well as the crowd at Kwan Im Thong Hood Co Temple, which was most packed during the weekends and public holidays. The street, which previously extended to Stamford Road, has been shortened after the construction of the Singapore Management University’s city campus and the MRT station.
There are several well-known landmarks, including the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, Maghain Aboth Synagogue, Sculpture Square, and Sri Krishnan Temple. The Maghain Aboth Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Singapore and was built by the local Jewish community in 1878.
Bugis (Kampong Bugis in Malay) is an area in Singapore that covers Bugis Street now located within the Bugis Junction shopping mall. Bugis Street was renowned internationally from the 1950s to the 1980s for its nightly gathering of transvestites and transsexuals, a phenomenon that made it one of Singapore’s most notable destinations for foreign visitors during that period.
Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple (Chinese: 觀音堂佛祖廟; pinyin: Guānyīn Táng Fózǔ Miào) is a traditional Chinese temple situated at 178 Waterloo Street in Singapore. The temple is of significance to the Chinese in Singapore and is believed to bring worshippers good luck after praying to the Kuan Yin (觀世音菩薩), or Avalokiteśvara, the Goddess of Mercy.
Sri Krishnan Temple (Tamil: ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணன் கோயில், transl. Srī kiruṣṇaṉ kōyil) is a Hindu temple in Singapore. Built in 1870 and gazetted as a national monument of Singapore in 2014, it is one of Singapore’s oldest temples and is the only South Indian temple in Singapore dedicated to Krishna and his consort Rukmini.
