The Dead Sea is a salt lake bounded by Jordan, Israel, and the West Bank. For thousands of years, people have traveled to the Dead Sea to indulge in its reputed medicinal qualities and to float in its incredibly thick waters. The mystery behind the dead sea, where much of the salt in the Dead Sea has become concentrated at the surface as it has become saltier in recent decades is, during the summer, increased heat from the sun heats the Dead Sea’s surface, separating the water into two separate layers: a warm top layer over a chilly bottom layer. When water evaporates from the top layer, it gets saltier than the cooler layer below. After several hundred thousand years, the Mediterranean’s water levels fell so low that the sea dried out, leaving behind massive salt deposits.
