Fascinating history and decay in the world’s first penitentiary – Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA. Built in 1829, the prison was a model for hundreds of prisons around the world, and operated until 1971. It was then abandoned for 20 years before efforts began to save it as a historic site. Tours are available year-round to see restored sections of the prison, as well as some of the decay that occurs after abandonment and aging. Some fascinating history here, and next week we will have a look at the prison’s famous Halloween attraction – “Terror Behind The Walls.”
