Vancouver is a City in Western Canada , located in the Lower Mainland of the province of Colombia -British . As the most populous city in the province, its population stands at 662,248 and its agglomeration at 2.6 million in 2021 , making it theeighth largest city and third largest metropolitan area in Canada. Vancouver has the highest population density in the entire country, with over 5,400 people per square kilometer.

It is one of the most ethno-racially and linguistically diverse cities in Canada: 52% of its residents are not native English speakers , 48.9% are native speakers of neither English nor French , and 50.6% of residents belong to visible minority groups . Vancouver is considered one of the most livable cities in Canada and in the world. However, it remains one of the most expensive cities in the world, particularly in terms of access to housing . City Council plans to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world. ” Vancouverism ” corresponds to this philosophy of urban planningfrom the city.

The town was originally named Gastown , and grew around a sawmill called Hastings Mills , built on July 1 , 1867, by sailor John Deighton . Gastown is then officially registered as a townsite called Granville. The site was renamed “Vancouver” and incorporated as a city in 1886 , through an agreement with the Canadian Pacific Railway Company . The following year, the transcontinental railroad was extended to the city. The city’s large natural seaport on the Pacific Ocean became a vital link in trade between the Far East , Europe and Eastern Canada .

Vancouver has hosted many international conferences and events, such as the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games , the 1976 UN Habitat I conference , the 1986 Specialized Exhibition , the APEC summit in 1997 , the World Police and Fire Games in 1989 and 2009 , several games of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup including the final at BC Place Stadium , the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics and theInternational Ornithological Congress in 2018 . In 1969 Greenpeace was founded in Vancouver . The city became the permanent home of TED conferences in 2014
