The town was originally named Gastown , and grew around a sawmill called Hastings Mills , built on July 1 , 1867, by sailor John Deighton . Gastown is then officially registered as a townsite called Granville. The site was renamed “Vancouver” and incorporated as a city in 1886 , through an agreement with the Canadian Pacific Railway Company . The following year, the transcontinental railroad was extended to the city. The city’s large natural seaport on the Pacific Ocean became a vital link in trade between the Far East , Europe and Eastern Canada .
Vancouver has hosted many international conferences and events, such as the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games , the 1976 UN Habitat I conference , the 1986 Specialized Exhibition , the APEC summit in 1997 , the World Police and Fire Games in 1989 and 2009 , several games of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup including the final at BC Place Stadium , the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics and theInternational Ornithological Congress in 2018 .
