Cambodia is a country located in Southeast Asia, bordered by Thailand to the west, Laos to the north, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the south. The country has a population of approximately 16 million people, with the majority being Khmer, the official language is also Khmer.
Cambodia has a rich history, with the ancient Khmer Empire being a dominant force in Southeast Asia between the 9th and 15th centuries. The ruins of the temples of Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are a testament to the country’s rich cultural heritage.
However, Cambodia is also known for the atrocities committed during the Khmer Rouge regime, which lasted from 1975 to 1979. During this time, the country was under the rule of the Communist Party of Kampuchea, led by Pol Pot. The Khmer Rouge’s policies led to the deaths of an estimated 1.5 to 2 million people, including intellectuals, professionals, and anyone deemed to be an enemy of the regime.
One of the most infamous places associated with the Khmer Rouge regime is the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, the capital city. This was one of many sites where the Khmer Rouge carried out mass executions and buried their victims in mass graves.
Despite the country’s tragic history, Cambodia has made strides towards rebuilding and developing its economy and society. The country has a growing tourism industry, with visitors attracted to its ancient temples, natural beauty, and vibrant culture. However, the legacy of the Khmer Rouge continues to impact the country, and many Cambodians continue to struggle with poverty and the aftermath of the genocide.
