Between 1983 and 2009, Sri Lanka was engulfed in Civil War. There was one group above all who would dominate this conflict. Their name would become infamous around the world as they fought for a Tamil homeland on an island dominated by a Sinhalese majority. Using suicide squads and child soldiers they would fight the world’s fourth largest army to a standstill and assassinated presidents and prime ministers. Were they terrorists or were they freedom fighters? This is the story of the Tamil Tigers.

“Correction:” , 03:43, Jaffna was not ~50% Tamil. The number was more like 10%. According to Gordon Weiss: ‘Prior to the rise of the Tamil Tigers, around 10 per cent of the population of Jaffna had been Sinhalese who had peacefully coexisted with their neighbours for generations’

  1. I still call the LTTE a terrorist organisation. Sure, what the Sri Lankan government did was wrong, but it didn't justify the Tamil Tigers killing innocent civilians, like the slaughter of buddhist monks in Anuradhapura in 1985, the 1996 Colombo Central Bank Bombing and the massacre of 600 police officers in 1990. Plus, using innocent civilians as human shields during the final thase of the civil war. So both the government and the LTTE are equally to blame for war crimes. I'm also so tired of the Tamil diaspora and sympathisers trying to say that they were "freedom fighters" which shows how tone deaf and ignorant they are.

  2. the amount of misinformation said in this video , sinhalese ppl burned down " the JAFFNA library" why ? because sinhalese were jealous, and were scared of our history, our pure language and rich background and they tried everything to steal our history by lying, writing books that is full of misinformation and stealing tamils merits and creating a fake nationalisme, ppl thinking LTTE is terrorism , the L stands for LIBERATION, let that sink in, imagine ppl stealing ur country, ur culture, ur territory, ur education, ur jobs, and y'all are going to do nothing ? exactly, please educate urself because Tamils were never wrong, even the captain died because he thought it was going to be a " professional meeting" and sinhalese army trapped him and killed him, the amount of sinhalese raping, torturing innocent tamil citizens, nah this video is a L please guys educate urself, Tamil will live forever, oldest language in the world, classical language, purest form, haters mad 😉

  3. Alex, I agree with MOST of this video, but saying that Jaffna has been inhabited by 50% Sinhalese and 50% Tamils before the war is incorrect. If I were you, I would address that error you have made to be pinned in the comments section.

  4. The day when srilankan people and their dirty politicians understand the fact that United we stand divided we fall they will prosper. Srilanka even after a indipendent eelam would have been greatly benefitted by eelam, how? Back then if the emotions of the tamil people was respected today eelam would have greatly supported srilanka. The dirty Chinese and other wicked countries would have been kept off.

  5. That's a very interesting video, thanks! Can you do one about the atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan Army and the different governments?

  6. This vedio have most of the misinformation and fakes.
Sri lanka is a tamils native land sinhalesh came from North India.
But ltte not fights for all over Sri Lanka they fights for 40% land tamil eelam

  7. Tamils of both Nadu and Eelam deserve a separate country. It's ok if the Eelam Tamils want a separate Tamil Eelam from Tamil Nadu.

  8. This video is so biased and the statics used are untrue. Don’t support a genocidal state like Sri Lanka. All the people who support white washing the Tamil struggle like this man are heartless humans

  9. waiting on the video about the war crimes and genocide the Sri Lankan government committed. funny thing is if you did your research properly u wldnt be this biased

  10. This is the DISINFORMATION. You are framing the genocide of Eelam Tamils by the Sri Lankan state as a “victory against Terrorism”, and are using resources by the SL government (which have been deemed unreliable repeatedly by Tamil genocide-survivor groups, international NGOs and even the UN). You are obviously are so biased and in favour of the Sri Lankan government, given that even the UN (despite cooperating with the Sri Lankan government during the genocidal war) has released multiple reports (2015 OHCHR Investigation on Sri Lanka, 2012 Report of Secretary-General on UN action in Sri Lanka, 2011 Panel of Experts report) documenting mass atrocities carried out by the Sri Lankan army against Tamils, including systematic widespread sexual violence, disappearances and torture. You haven’t even watched major documentaries screened at the UN on the final stages of the genocidal war, including Callum Macrae’s 2015 No Fire Zone: In the Killing Fields of Sri Lanka.

In the 1950s-1970s, Tamils peacefully protested for education rights and equal political representation from a racist regime that was Sinhala Buddhist Extremist. What did they get in return? Multiple anti-Tamil pogroms carried out by Sinhalese mobs & security forces that was orchestrated by the government (1956, 1958, 1961, 1977, 1981 and Black July on 1983), where thousands of Tamils were murdered and subjected to unimaginable sexual violence and torture. Tamils only picked up armed resistance as a last resort against continued genocidal massacres and pogroms by the state, and many of us were forced to flee our homeland because of state terrorism.

LASTLY, when was Jaffna 50% Sinhalese before the war?? If you are so into using the Sri Lankan government resources, didn’t you even bother to check the demographic statistics by the department of statistics and census before the war? Even that says that in 1971, Jaffna was only 2.9% Sinhalese and 92.07% Tamils. Stop spreading disinformation on behalf of the Sri Lankan government, and know your privilege. Our stories of the atrocities we went through have been twisted enough by western folks who have not even a remote connection to the Tamil community.

  11. @Alex Rothman, your content is AMAZING. I just finished your Tajikistan playlist. I feel like I just got a crash course of the country. Keep up the awesome work! Looking forward to more of your content.

  12. Please stop. You are a white supremacist who can’t get facts straight or recognise his own bias. If you getting the statistics around Sinhalese very wrong wasn’t enough of a red flag, then to frame the genocidal Sri Lankan state as having a, “victory over terrorism” when the Tamil Tigers were using armed resistance to the colonisers as they’d exhausted all other options? What do you do when peaceful protest doesn’t work? When you’re cornered?

Please remove this video. This is not your story to tell, and you can’t even tell it with accuracy. A simp to the Sri Lankan state.

  13. In 2050:
Sinhalese: We are the original natives of 🇱🇰🇱🇰.
Tamils: No. We were here even before Vijayan.
Muslims: Who gives a fuc*. We are the majority now. 😂😂

  14. you can’t just skip out key information and create a completely false narrative, especially when your a journalist you should know better. Firstly, you made this entirely one sided and not focusing on why they did this. Secondly, there’s some false facts. I mean if you think the tigers are bad look at what the Sri Lankan government did… down to genocide, land grabs, funding, the power they have over international media, Keenie meenie etc. Literally find it impossible that you made this video if you actually did proper research you would of seen all this. All you had to do was create a fair video showing both sides with the actual historical events and let the viewers decide but no you don’t . L video fr

  15. CORRECTION: At 3:41 I say that half the population of Jaffna had been Sinhalese. This is incorrect. On looking back at my sources I found this from Gordon Weiss: "Prior to the rise of the Tamil Tigers, around 10 per cent of the population of Jaffna had been Sinhalese who had peacefully coexisted with their neighbours for generations". Other sources (e.g. Wikipedia) put the number lower than that. I've tried to put in a correction card on the video itself but it hasn't worked. My apologies and thank you to those people who pointed this out.

Secondly, there are many comments on this video accusing me of bias. While of course it is impossible to be completely neutral, and on such a sensitive issue it is probably inevitable that many people think I have a bias one way or another, the one thing I would point out is that this video is meant to be watched as part of a series. Of course this video focuses on the LTTE and what they did, and spends comparatively less time on the actions of the Sri Lankan army. That is because in the next few videos I will be focusing on the other combatant in this conflict. After that I will, no doubt, get accusations coming from the other side.

Ultimately, I hope, I will have achieved some sort of balance and, I must say, I still stand by almost all of the information presented so far in this series (with the exception of the correction above).

  16. 30yeras black history ended now Tamil, Muslime Sinhala we all are together at least even now we can understand this war and racism panting in our mind as a political strategy why because they can't control us as unity this all top politician tamill, sinahal even Muslims all together try to divide otherwise they can not conducting the own wealth and unethical thing so now we are here this is time for change this unethical black political culture

  17. The Tamil Tigers are the legitimate military of the Tamils. Until the fall of de-facto Tamil Eelam, they were our guardian angels. Now look at the Tamils: they have no one to represent them, and their history is distorted by some random paid YouTubers in the name of telling history who have no connection with the islanders. Tamils homeland is now under the control of Sinhalese, who are praising this propaganda channel. We Eelam Tamils need to create the true history.

These YouTube sudden historians will tell anything for a price. If we pay, he may side with us too. He Won't tell the actual factual history!

  18. Absolutely false video. Don’t poke your nose in matters you do not have full context of. Even an idiot could gather more accurate information about the genocide and our defenders from even western media. The horrific acts committed by the government on innocent Tamils are obvious. How much did you get paid to portray Tamils and the tigers with fiction?

  19. Tamil tigers real warriors and war heros they never begged to other countries help for money and weapons in war they fight like heroes but sinhala begged for help still now they r begging for food

  20. As you are ever-so obsessed with credentials despite referring to the most white-washed and false resources, let me address my lived experiences anchored with my qualifications so you dare not dispute what I say. I am an Eelam Tamil gender-based violence counsellor with a decade of frontline experience in ancestral-based crisis intervention, decolonized mental health, community organizing and liberatory research and writing. Your video has caused great harm to me and members of my community, and I am utterly outraged by its disinformation.

Your blatant lies have triggered genocide survivors' PTSD, as they have first-hand accounts of experiencing sexual violence at the hands of the genocidal Sri Lankan army. Your outrageous reasonings that such forms of violence against our people is understandable war tactics is downright disgusting as you are supporting the Sri Lankan state war crimimals. Most importantly, according to ICRC, rape and other forms of sexual violence, when committed in the context of a genocidal war either international or non-international, constitute violations under international humanitarian law (IHL).

As a supposed researcher and teacher, you have a duty to conduct thorough research and consult with Tamil genocide survivors when addressing such sensitive issues. It is also your responsibility as a white-privileged man to support the Eelam Tamil community in their fight for liberation from the 75 years and ongoing SL state genocidal violence by amplifying their voices, rather than attempting to speak on their behalf and spread disinformation.

In this vein, if you do not remove this video in 24 hours, we will be filing mass complaints to the school you are currently teaching at, Cambridge International School Russia for racial profiling, miseducation online and being a danger to students by promoting sexual violence in reasoning that Sri Lankan's army's violence against Tamils is understandable war tactics

  21. what about the tamils biggest historical librerry burn witch start the war. the tamil or singalease people ait got nutting to do with it, its some of singalaese with power who start the reason for splitt of tamil and singalaese, all old people know bout it, even many young people who know bout it they dont want to talk bout it and they scared cause mosley workes in low are corrupted

  22. Brother just wanted to say this because I am a Sri Lankan Tamil aswell and I feel like it's really important that I as an Eelam Tamil have to say this. First of all I disagree with your fact that your saying the Tamil Tigers were terrorists and Sinhaleese people are peaceful. I am not saying that the Tamil Tigers are not always right and Not all Sinhaleese people are Bad! You need to Understand what brought the Tamil Tigers in the 1st place. It all started when the Tamils were starting to rise up with everything from education to wealth etc. As the country was under the control of the Singala people for a very long time they either didn't like us growing or scared that we would of overpowered them, so they started discrimination against all Tamils and all our parents, grandparents and their parents were living in hell during that stage. You can even search this famous picture where a group of singalaees teens strip a Tamil man naked and they all take pictures and laugh at him while he was in sorrow sitting on the ground. If you were in this position what would you have done? You would want to fight back right that's exactly what they did! That was when our leader Prabhakaran the only leader who had the guts to stand up for our people and get a freedom for our people. It's basically like how Black's would of got freedom in America, How indains got independence from the british! And I agree we did use Gaureila tactics but that was the only way we could of got atleast some peace today! Also I don't think before you made this video actually know the facts I am not being rude or anything but this whole video is not right it feels like you are one sided so you could say this is your opinion not facts! I am happy to help you educate on this further brother! Nandri 🙌🏾

  23. Interesting and informative video.. However one small observation: I think the last portion of the video after 17 minutes appears to be your personal experience of traveling in Sri Lanka..While it is interesting, however it is irrelevant to the topic which you are discussing I.e "who are the tamil tigers".. Also with regard to caste system unlike in India and especially the state of Tamilnadu where caste is very relevant (I am saying this as a tamilian myself) in Sri Lanka tamils are a more homogenous group and caste while prevalent is not that relevant as the main source of conflict is ethnic against the dominant Sinhalese population..

  24. In 1830s British brought more than 60000 south indian malabarians , malays to construct colombo to kandy main road , after the road construction all of them were settle down in north coastal area of sri lanka as "Ceylon tamils" , nowadays they want separate sri lanka
