Being is a deep-water port; the ships sail right up to the city. They could not get closer. It has therefore been fought over throughout history and has been a maritime gateway for Germany, Austria, and Central Europe. Sine 1939 it has belonged to Italy. As such it is multicultural, it is well-developed and has much history and many churches. Slovenia is only 8km away, and Croatia is just 30km away. There is a free elevator to the top of San Giusto Hill if you do not want the climb, Jean walks up from the Roman Theatre, past the 14th Century Cucherna Tower. After the castle and Cathedral, she walks down through the Johann Joachim Winckelman Museum and Gardens towards the James Joyce Museum and the Statue of Joyce at the canal, the old shipping port. There you can relax and have a drink or lunch. She finishes by showing us the Aquarium, the pier and the old lighthouse near the ship, but found by turning right as you leave the ship and step ashore.
