Milan is a city in northern Italy, capital of Lombardy, recognized as one of the world’s four fashion capitals along with New York City, Paris, and London. With a population of about 1.4 million, Milan is the second-most populous city in Italy after Rome. The city played a major political role in world’s history which dates back to the late antiquity, when it served as the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Between the 12th century and the 16th century, Milan was one of the largest European cities and an important commercial centre. It was the capital of the Duchy of Milan and one of the greatest political, artistic and fashion forces in the Renaissance époque. A Christian-majority city since the late Roman Empire, Milan is home to one of the largest cathedrals in the world. The Duomo is the fifth-largest cathedral in the world and the second-largest in Italy. Famous for its art and architecture, Milan is home to many cultural institutions, museums and art galleries. It is the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper hosted inside the gothic church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The city hosts La Scala Opera House (Teatro alla Scala) considered one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses in the world. Regarded as a global capital in industrial design, fashion and architecture, Milan has an elegant vibe and many hidden corners which make it a great city to be explored. Waterways built to help the transportation of goods from local lakes to the city once crisscrossed Milan’s city centre. Today, only five canals remain from the former networks of Navigli. One of the oldest navigable canals in Europe, Grand Canal (Naviglio Grande), which dates back to 1177, today is a popular place for a walk (passeggiata) in the heart of the capital city of Lombardia. It is lined with bars, cafes and art boutiques making it a bohemian place waiting to be explored. Milan is home to two of the world’s best football teams: Inter Milan(1908) and A.C. Milan (1899) which play at the San Siro Stadium, the largest stadium in Italy.
