It is located at the mouth of the Rio Douro river in northern Portugal. With its population of 327,539 in the 2005 census, it is the country’s most important industrial point and the capital of the province of the same name. The city center, located on the northern bank of the Rio Doura River, was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
