ABOUT THE SUTTON JONAH BRADY CHANNEL:
Sutton Jonah Brady began out of a burning desire to connect people. To connect people to a STORY, to a sense of ADVENTURE and ultimately to EACH OTHER. Sutton spent much of his teens and early twenties living out adventures which he attempted to capture through film. Each attempt to tell the stories was met with some obstacle. This channel is the result of breaking through those barriers which previously held back these adventures and stories from being told.

You can get good coffee almost everywhere in Australia, Starbucks coffee is tasteless, I tried it once, it was so weak even after 3 shots, that is the main reason it failed, it wasn't because of their business model, its the lack of quality of their product.
Donāt forget to leave a comment below šš½ let us know why you think Starbucks failed in Australia & what you would do differently!
The Dutch taught Americans how to drink coffee. In Australia it was the Italians. That's the main difference.
Haha yes I've never understood why a lot of Americans love Starbucks. It's over priced for what it is and just way too sugary and weak on coffee.šš¤·āāļø. It's very gimmicky. It's not coffee to us.
From our perspective we've had a long history of great and traditional coffee which goes back to the Italians in the 30s.
On the opposite end Australia has apparently influenced Americans growing speciality coffee scene and culture. There's videos on that. I do think America is getting better at having better quality coffee. It's just not as widespread as it is here. You have to research where you go, where as here you can go to most places and get a decent and good cup.
The fast roll out didn't help Starbucks but
ultimately barista training is probably the biggest difference. The training here is generally better and held to a higher standard. If you're not making good coffee you won't last. Anyone can buy good machines and good beans etc but the training and also the care that goes into it. There's a love and art to it. It's not just pumping out stuff to make a buck. You have to care about what you are making.
And yes you are right, it's also because coffee here is seen as social experience and the quality. Not just something to wake us up. Aside from when you are running to work… coffee to go isn't as huge here. We like to sit and have it.
You are correct, we do support local businesses a lot here over chains. (not just coffee but also other fast food restaurants and clothing etc).
Starbucks rebranded itself towards international students and tourists lol. And if you go to any in Australia that's who will be inside, won't be many Aussies. They also have a few drive through models in more regional towns where there's lots of long distance drivers going through.
Gloria Jean's always had the flat white etc on the menu. They came from Chicago I think.
And you are right again, keeping up with the Joneses is not as huge here. We don't like bragging. People are generally seen the same here no matter what your job or background here, it's a little less materialistic and less class divide I guess. you have to stay humble.
I love that you are humble and so open to learning and adapting to the coffee scene/cafe culture here. That will help you succeed where others have failed. šā. Looking forward to keeping up with your progress on here !
Having tried Starbucks, itās weak and lacking flavour and letās be frankā¦ā¦you aināt going back for bad coffee. Another elementā¦ā¦..Australians hates having American ways shoved down their throat. The onslaught of stores everywhere overnight may have been viewed as American arrogance. Zarraffaās (Founded on the Gold Coast)shits all over Starbucks and Gloria Jeans in my opinion.
over-exposure of something you can get better elsewhere
I think I've had Starbucks 3 times, once in Newport, Rhode Is, once in HK and once in Sydney. Always weak, watery, burnt tasting coffee, served in takeaway cups instead of ceramic. If you drink in, it should be served in ceramic, think of the environment. Gloria Jeans is almost as bad. They both seem to specialise in sweet drinks rather than coffee.
I prefer non-chain coffee shops where there is more care taken. But then I also prefer tea.
What do you think of bubble tea shops like Gong Cha, Chatime etc? These seem to be more successful here than Starbucks.
Also, the current roll out of Taco Bell is the 3rd attempt. They failed in the early 80s. Then again tried in shared stores with KFC in the late 90s, also failed. Now they are trying again. Their food is much inferior to other chains here like Mad Mex, Zambrero, Guzman Y Gomez.
Not only did it fail, it never stood a chance..we are coffee snobs…It just wasn't up to our standard…
Starbucks mostly failed here in Aus because their product, no matter the type of coffee, is bloody awful compared to what was already here. Starbucks best was worse than our worst product. I can stomach awful hospital coffee better than Starbucks
Aussies will give any new business a go, but if your product isn't up to our standards (which is high) we won't be back for seconds
Starbucks failed because they didn't adjust their menu for the local market, and it's an American corporation…not a good combo. I mean, their coffee is straight up rubbish. Also taco bell failed their first time too since it was before Social media, and "Mexican" cuisine wasn't known
Tried Starbucks when they first appeared here in Melbourne. Seemed all about quantity and sugary flavours adulterating the coffee rather than simple quality. Very weak, sweet and unappealing to drink, like they used the cheapest beans and then brewed them wrong. Felt like the McDonalds of coffee.
Gloria Jeans is a bit better but I only go there if there's no other choice. Coffee Clube seems a bit better – more menu choices and reasonable coffee. But I will always prefer the atmosphere, attention to quality and care of a proper independent cafe.
Recently a Starbucks appeared in my local shopping mall – I only ever see Asian foreigners drinking there, presumably because its familiar to them.
Hi mate Maccas rolled out slowly as did KFC and it worked, though Maccas coffee was crap to start but after 40 yrs or so I will drink their coffee they spent years getting it better, yes your accent still works
So now they sell Starbucks Pods in Coles, woolies and IGA
While on holiday in London from Melbourne, went to a couple of big chain coffee outlets a few times including Starbucks. Didnāt realise I was a coffee snob until then as I had to be really specific in my request to staff on how I wanted my coffee. And here I was thinking I was just ordering a bog standard Latte. BTW coffee in Italy is ammmaaazing!
Starbucks failed here because their coffee was absolute shit!
Starbucks failed because they went too big too soon and never pivoted to suit the Australian market. All the successful American companies in Australia started slow and climatised to the local market. McDonald's Australia is actually the most successful international franchise in the world for market share due to the ability to adapt and listen
