puy – de -Dôme is a department in central France located in the Auvergne – Rhône – Alpes administrative region . Its name comes from the dormant volcano : the Puy de Dôme .

It corresponds quite remotely to the former Bas-Pays d’Auvergne , an administrative subdivision of the province of Auvergne under the Ancien Régime .

Its inhabitants were called Puydomois , a name approved by the General Council in December 2005 , then modified in the spring of 2006 , following numerous letters received at the headquarters of the General Council . The official name today, reproduced on all documents, is Puy dômois .

Insee and La Poste assign the department the code 63.
    History
The department was created during the French Revolution , the March 5 , 1790under the law of December 22 , 1789, from part of the province of Auvergne .

When it was created in 1790 , the department was to be called Mont-d’Or , but the deputy for Clermont-Ferrand , Gaultier de Biauzat intervened because he thought the name would draw the attention of the tax authorities to his fellow citizens; he was listened to and the department was finally called Puy-de-Dôme.

The current department corresponds to only part of the former administrative subdivision called ” Basse-Auvergne “, to which also belonged part of the current department of Allier ( Combrailles , North of Limagne between Aigueperse and Saint-Pourçain , the city of Cusset and the Montagne bourbonnaise ) and the Brivadois (region of Brioude ) currently in the Haute-Loire , without forgetting the north-eastern fringe of the Cantal (up to the Rhue ), including the Cézallier .

AtJanuary 1 , 2016the Auvergne region , to which the department belonged, merges with the Rhône-Alpes region to become the new Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes administrative region .
