Karaköy is a district of Istanbul ‘s Beyoğlu district. It is one of the oldest commercial centers, famous for its banks and office buildings. It is the modern name of the old Galata district. It has come to the forefront as a port and trade center throughout history. It is located at the mouth of the Golden Horn on the European side of the Bosphorus . Karaköy is one of the very historical areas of the city and one of the oldest. In the last quarter of the 19th century, it had become the financial center of the Ottoman Empire . Today, it is an important trade and transportation center.
The region is connected to the surrounding districts from Karaköy Square. In the southwest , the Galata Bridge connects Karaköy to Eminönü . Tersane Street opens to Azapkapı in the west , Voyvoda Street opens to Şişhane in the northwest , Yüksek Kaldirim Street opens to Beyoğlu in the north, Kemeraltı and Necatibey Street leads to Tophane in the northeast . Karaköy district was the meeting place of banks and insurance companies in the 19th century. It is also one of the places where mechanical , electrical , electronic and plumbing equipment can be easily found today.
