The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 6 May 2023, at Westminster Abbey. Charles acceded to the throne on 8 September 2022, upon the death of his mother, Elizabeth II.

Compared with previous coronations, the ceremony will undergo some alterations to represent multiple faiths, cultures, and communities across the United Kingdom, and will be shorter than his mother’s coronation in 1953. The ceremony will begin with the anointing of Charles, symbolising his spiritual entry into kingship, and then his crowning and enthronement, representing his assumption of temporal powers and responsibilities. Camilla will be crowned in a shorter and simpler ceremony. The royal family will travel to Buckingham Palace afterward, in a state procession, and appear on the balcony to celebrate the occasion.

In addition to the coronation ceremony, the event will be marked by public ceremonies and celebrations in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the British Crown Dependencies and overseas territories. On 7 May, the Coronation Big Lunch will take place in the United Kingdom, providing the public with the opportunity to mark the occasion with street parties. Also a Coronation Concert will be held on the same day at Windsor Castle with representatives of the King and Queen’s charities as well as members of the general public in attendance. The Big Help Out initiative will take place on 8 May, to encourage community service and volunteering. Both the coronation at Westminster Abbey and the concert at Windsor Castle will be broadcast on television and streamed online.

This will be the first coronation of a British monarch in the 21st century, and the 40th to be held at Westminster Abbey since that of William the Conqueror in 1066.

  1. I have heard the ring which is only ever worn/used at The Coronation will be presented to Charles but he isn't going to wear it, I think it was something to do with having to have it resized. So the ring alongside the ring Camilla would also wear I understand will be carried on a velvet cushion rather than worn on this occasion.

  2. The Queens platinum jubilee celebrations brought in over £1billion, and I guess the Coronation will bring in even more. Seems its worth it.

  3. Instead of all 92 aristocratic peers ( wearing their robes & coronets) swearing allegiance to King Charles in the abbey, the number has been cut down to 32 and they will be wearing suits. Personally, I think this is a pity 😟 they should at least let the 32 wear their regalia. Thank you for your interest in our history, it's much appreciated !

  4. I remember watching the Queens Coronation it went on for hours but very interesting. The King is trying to keep the costs down as much as possible and the length of the ceremony is going to be shorter. The security costs will obviously be high. There are people already camping out on the procession route!!

  5. The Koh-i-noor diamond was gifted, not stolen. I do wish narrators would get this right. The descendants of the Sikh nobleman who gifted it have said that they want it to be in Camilla's crown. The story is that it was given in thanks for help putting down a Sikh uprising.

  6. It’s going to be a real spectacle, but also it’s a very sacred pact between His Majesty and God. The part when the choir sing Zadok the Priest is such a awe inspiring moment. You will have to watch and you will see what I mean.

  7. I saw the coronation of Queen Elizabeth on a TV that my Dad bought especially for the occasion. It had a 9" screen and many of our Neighbours came to our house to watch it

  8. The ring is either for the ceremony only or only state occasions HM The Queen wasn’t seen wearing the ring in any footage on tv.

  9. Indifferent. +1 for his lifetime of environmentalism, which is more than the next vapid couple in line. Not going to be declaring my allegiance, which is a new thing this time. 🇬🇧

  10. The Royal Family are eternally and acutely aware of public sentiment on a wide range of important issues, the cost of their existence being uppermost. This is evident in the curtailing of the formal Crowning service at the Abbey to a single hour. I am an ardent Royalist and am grateful for the stability and strong sense of national identity and belonging the monarchy brings to the country. Presidents come and go and are easily forgotten. Kings and Queens live on for eternity in our hearts and minds. £100m for this rare and joyous spectacle is a piffling sum compared to the hundreds of billions wasted on our former membership of the EU for almost nothing in return.

  11. I am a royalist and very much for the Coronation, but I will startle people by also declaring that I'm a Socialist and on the left wing of the Labour Party!
I hate modern capitalism, but I think why the monarchy still has so much popularity in the UK is because it harks back to older, better, theories of authority: the ancient principle of "Noblesse Oblige" [nobility has obligations]; your feudal Lord had obligations to you as well as to him. (A relic of this was in case of riot. If there was property damage in a riot, the King and his Government paid compensation, because they hadn't protected you. The Metropolitan Police desperately tried to wriggle out of this after riots in London in 2011.)
And there's plenty of money – or there would be if this Conservative Government wasn't letting huge companies and the extremely rich get away with avoiding/evading huge amounts of tax! The national budget is of the order of £700-£800 thousand million, and the tax avoided could easily be £200, 000, 000, 000.
The Coronation has been cut short by cutting short the Homage. In the old days every single noble paid homage. (Because the poor boy was only nine, the Coronation of Edward VI in 1547 was cut down from eleven hours to seven!) In 1953, only the senior noble in each degree paid Homage.
Apparently, we will be asked to say our Homage, if we want it, at home watching. I don't really approve; it's the powerful people in the country who should pay Homage.
I genuinely believe that, secretly, the Right Wing are trying to get rid of the monarchy. Their papers seem to be trying to stir it as much as they possibly can.

  12. It's nowhere near 100 million. That includes the cost of the state coach (which is already owned), the cost of police and armed forces (who are already paid for). The cost of the horses (already owned). The cost of the aircraft from the RAF (which we already own). The actual cost in reality is only 7-10 million as all the assets are already 'paid for' as its all state resources.

  13. Recent comments say it will last about 2 hours. I wish they wouldn’t try to value these jewels, £6.5 million for St Edwards crown – come on, that’s the price of a large house in London! Let’s just say they are priceless and leave it at that 😮

  14. I heard today that Queen Elizabeth's recent Platinum Jubilee brought £6 billion. We have had several of those, so a Coronation – the first in 70 years – who can say what the figure will be.

  15. The diamond that causes such controversy was actually given as a gift to the Monarchy by India. It has had a colourful life and several countries have sought to claim ownership.

  16. The coronation is due to bring in over £1 billion Pounds sterling 💷 so around $1.75 billion US in revenue from tourism alone that is without all the money being spent on collectibles to do with this historic day God save the king 🤴

  17. You woo'd at the worth of St Edward's Crown, but what they didn't say on this video is that the Imperial State Crown is worth between 3 – 5 Billion pounds, yes BILLION. That's the crown that was atop HMQE2's coffin in the funeral procession.

  18. The estimated amount of funds from tourism is £1 BILLION, no contest! But it is so much MORE than a spectacle. The tradition and ritual are beyond compare anywhere else in the world. LONG LIVE THE KING,

  19. Charles has the option of a "cut price" Coronation more fitting to the stark poverty and wealth inequality in our society today, but he said no to that. The excuses for offsetting the gigantic taxpayer cost of this event are legion. "it'll be mostly security costs" or "it'll bring in more revenue from tourism and merchandising" but the fact is, no one will ever know the real truth of the cost. Nor what the revenue benefits actually are for the country, any more than the British people will ever know exactly how much land, money and power the Royal Family truly have. They've done a good job being quite secretive about that over the years. Did you know that the British Government are rushing through draconian anti-protest laws, coincidentally directly ahead of the Coronation, because a number of peaceful anti-monarchy protests are planned. Just watch those protesters carted off in handcuffs by police because they had the effrontery not to agree with the royalist hysteria of this giant waste of money which the taxpayer is paying for – not the billionaire royals, or the political establishment that is behind this. We may as well bring back a host of medieval practices because 21st century Britain is now grandly marching back to the Middle Ages. Or live in Putin's Russia, given how anti democratic and authoritarian it has become. A cautionary note. Enjoy the Coronation and support Charles as your King if you choose. No one is stopping you. After all it's a free country, isn't it? And don't forget that oath of allegiance! Peasants everywhere will salute you.

  20. Your assumption of the pay off in tourism is correct. It is a shame a few more people who live here couldn’t grasp that as quickly. Let’s not forget that the King has done more through the Prince’s Trust for people in poverty that the majority of politicians. Yet those same people wish to do away with a monarch and have a more powerful self serving politician. Go figure.

  21. Quite mind blowing really. Such a historic occasion. Whether you're a Monarchist or not, this is 'living in history' as you said. My Mother camped out in London on the pavement with fellow students to see the late Queen's Coronation. She's 92 years of age. She also stayed up to see the Funeral of the late Queen.
It was interesting to note that in her 92 years of life, she started out singing 'God Save The King' as a youngster in school in Ceylon, then heard 'God save The Queen' for the duration of the late Queen's 50 plus year reign, and is alive to hear the Anthem revert back to 'God Save The King', all in her lifetime. All of us with older parents are living with history books. My Dad's 90 years of age. We really should take note of their recollections. When their generation is gone, we've lost that history, not just in our families, but in society too. I felt the same way when my Grandparents died, especially my Grandmother (paternal) who had this incredible memory for historical details. I think that's why Queen Elizabeth II's passing struck me so surprisingly hard, as my Grandmother's death did.. She represented history and way of life, service and duty that very few people other than members of the Monarchy, religious figures etc seem to abide by. They stand out as a result.
God Bless the late Queen, RIP. God give His Grace to the current Monarchy and the King, Britain and the Commonwealth. This is historic.

  22. no the king will not ware the ring all the time its for the coronation the queen also gets one for her coronation its great to be British thousands go to see it in person and millions watch on tv then a party in the afternoon well into the night sleep repeat the next day so proud this is happening in my country

  23. They think it will bring in a billion pounds from tourism! Giving extra hours to workers, extra sales of all sorts of items from souvenirs to meals in restaurants, full hotel rooms and overseas tourists deciding to stay longer and see other places!

  24. Youre completely correct when it comes to the cost. The UK makes a profit from the RF every year. £100 million would have been paid off long ago.

  25. There is a magnificent video on the ' military bands everywhere ' channel of all the coronation bands returning over Waterloo Bridge to waterloo station post Coronation. I found itvery moving 🇺🇸✌️🇬🇧
