This is my one and only full day in Zurich so I wanted to make the most of the time I had. I booked a couple of free walking tours and visited Lake Zurich and the Zurich Funicular (Polybahn zürich) whilst I waited for them to start. Lake Zurich was so peaceful and calm, and I got to see the mountain lookout I’d climbed the day before. The Polybahn was a short but enjoyable ride up to Zurich University and a few museums.

The walking tour featured a lot of important and interesting buildings from around the city including the 12th century Grossmünster Cathedral, the large clock face of St Peter, the copper-topped spire of Fraumünster Church and the shopping & eating street Niederdorf. My favourite place though was the panoramic viewpoint right in the city centre of Zurich called the Lindenhof – which is any photographer’s dream location. As we walked around I learnt a little about the city’s history and culture.

Next I headed over to a place known as Zurich West where I joined another walking tour and learnt about the area’s industrial past. Many of the factory’s are now shops and it’s still possible to make out the chimney stacks and outbuildings that have since been repurposed. It’s a trendy area with quirky stores and a market selling all kinds of local produce. The guide said it was an area where you’ll mostly find locals enjoying a drink after work or spending some time hanging with friends.

Before heading back into central Zurich I walked up Langstrasse Avenue and through a few parks and gardens. Zurich certainly surpassed my expectations and I’m glad I had the opportunity to take a look around.

  1. I'd missed from the last video that as part of this series you'll also visit Liechtenstein – how awesome as it's so tiny, it feels crazy to go there for just that, but tying it in with Switzerland is smart!! Really loved the song you chose to have playing over the Lake Zurich footage, a mishmash of all kinds of stuff, it was like heavy metal meets zydeco with some happy clapping thrown in. I wonder how big Zurich grew before they brought in numbers rather than house names as it feels crazy to only work with names. Must have been a night mare for any new postal workers. I really liked the feel and design of Zurich West too. Fab video as always!

  2. Thanks for the tour!!! Zurich is such an interesting place!! It’s the perfect mix of modern and historical sights! Zurich west looks like a great area too! Thanks for showing us around!!

  3. Matt this was a great look around here, Zurich is so beautiful, I love the architecture here and the brick monuments of screwdrivers were fascinating to see. The disused factory turned into a shopping centre is great and so good that it's been kept in the original style. Love the original courthouse turned resturant. Greatvtour 🙂 ~ Anna 👍

  4. They seem to teach you so much on these free walking tours. That is a heck of a clock tower. One day when we are as rich as you, we can afford to go to Zurich. We have been to re purposed factories that are now malls in Poland, but those in Zurich do still look exactly like factories inside. We had a Kurdish waitress last time we were in Istanbul.

  5. Can you visit Finland again for some new videos. There are lot of not so touristy towns to visit. Joensuu and Lappeenranta for example.
